As Administrative and Executive Assistants, we tend to appreciate a good plan, and we can find real satisfaction when the execution of that plan is flawless. We can also fall prey to the lie that the flawless execution of a well-thought-out plan is proof of our skill.

Well, maybe….

There is another factor that must be included in this equation known as … the UNknown. Ah, that pesky little variable that can throw even the most seasoned Assistant into a tailspin. The UNknown can be a huge source of frustration as we juggle numerous details and schedules – popping in from out of nowhere. And it is nearly impossible to plan for it because it is, well, UNknown.

So in addition to the perceived security of skillful planning, we must learn to ride the dangerous-feeling waves of the UNknown.

Growing up in land-locked Colorado, I have always admired the skill of surfers. People who know how to read the waves, time the ride, and perch themselves on that board with grace and strength. Amazing! Just a little time in the water will quickly teach any surfer-wanna-bes that the powerful waves are in charge and that is non-negotiable – there is an inherent danger to surfing that each surfer must be prepared for. So they must practice and be a student of the waves in order to be as safe as possible in their thrill-seeking. Surfboards don’t have seatbelts.

Which brings me back to the UNknown elements of assisting. Speaking for myself, and maybe you can relate, I can find false security in my planning. It is so easy to look at my action plans and think that they are airtight, moving ahead in my own strength and skill. Yes, planning is important AND we must be wise enough to include some margin for the UNknown.

In their hearts humans plan their course,
but the Lord establishes their steps.
Proverbs 16:9

We need to find ourselves so in tune with – submitted to – the Holy Spirit that when the UNknown presents itself, we innately trust Him to guide each move and lead each response. Riding those waves with skill and confidence as our Lord proves Himself faithful and fully able to help us.

It is thrilling to be invited into the Lord’s work. And, yes, there are times when we feel like we are in over our heads. But we can trust the Lord to equip us for His work; the work He invited us into.

Now may the God of peace,
who through the blood of the eternal covenant
brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will,
and may he work in us what is pleasing to him,
through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.
